Rabbits are small, adorable, and very nice creatures; there are different breeds, and each has its own characteristics. Let’s see which are some of the most suitable breeds for family life, in order to help you with your choice.
The best rabbit breeds
Some rabbits are friendlier than others, others have a particularly beautiful coat; some require more care and attention than others. In addition to these details, there are other more subtle differences between the various breeds, but the rabbit is usually chosen based on these characteristics.
Another factor not to be overlooked is the possible risk of particular diseases, linked to a particular breed.
The Chinchilla rabbit
These are very calm and friendly rabbits. They are very docile and love to be pampered and picked up.
In adulthood, these specimens weigh 4-7 pounds and live about 8 years. Their fur is gray and very soft, pleasant to the touch. They are much loved domestic rabbits, but they need a lot of space to move and play: they are also very active and full of energy.
In regards to health, the chinchilla rabbit is prone to ear mites and overgrowth of the teeth.
In addition to these specimens, there are also giant chinchilla rabbits. It’s one of the largest breeds of rabbits in the world: these rabbits weigh between 9 and 12 pounds; their fur is gray and very soft.
The Sussex rabbit
It’s a fairly recent breed. The Sussex rabbit is docile, friendly, highly intelligent, and perfect for training. There is a negative note: these specimens tend to gain weight quickly, so be sure to provide them with proper nutrition.
They are medium-sized rabbits, they weigh about 6 pounds and live between 6 and 8 years. Their golden coat was born from the crossing between the Californian rabbit and the lilac specimen, which took place in the 1980s.
The Dutch rabbit
Dutch rabbits have a particular hair that distinguishes them. They usually have a black and white coat, but they can also be brown and white or gray and white. They are very docile and friendly specimens, therefore perfect for children; initially, however, they can be very shy.
In adulthood, the Dutch weigh 4-6 pounds and can live from 5 to 8 years. They are not subject to any particular pathology, but during the summer they shed large amounts of hair. They need to exercise, so make sure you give them enough room to move.
The French Aries
The French ram is also a fairly large rabbit: it can exceed 8 pounds and has powerful muscles.
They are particularly sociable and affectionate specimens, with large and soft ears: you will always want to cuddle them, and they love cuddling! Thanks to their very pleasant character, they are among the rabbits best suited for family life.
The Himalayan rabbit
This breed is one of the most suitable for families with children: they are extremely sociable, friendly, and also very curious. As adults, they weigh about 4 pounds.
The Himalayan rabbit has a beautiful and very particular coat: the coat is entirely white, except for the legs, nose, and ears, which can be black, gray, or brown.
If you decide to get a Himalayan, keep in mind that bunnies of this breed are particularly sensitive to low temperatures, and are likely to get sick easily.
The Californian rabbit
Californian rabbits are also very friendly, making them suitable for families with children. At first, they may seem very shy but, once set, their character will surprise you: they are very tender and calm specimens, they love to receive pampering and attention.
These rabbits are very similar to the Himalayan ones, however, they are larger: in adulthood, they can weigh from 6 to 10 pounds; they are medium in size, have a rounded structure and their coat is short and soft.
These specimens tend to live longer than many other breeds: they can reach up to 10 years of life. In spring, these rabbits shed a lot of hair. Also, keep in mind that they need a lot of space to exercise. Finally, this breed is not subject to any particular pathology.
