Mini Pit Bull: Miniature Fighting Dog or Affectionate Pet?

It’s no secret that the Pit Bull Terrier is a breed that is treated with apprehension, and sometimes even with hatred. The notoriety is due to illiterate upbringing, poor conditions of detention, and illegal breeding.

Few people know that these dogs can take on the role of a rescuer or a valiant police officer helping to find bombs and drugs. But, apart from opponents, the breed has a large number of fans.

Their efforts led to the emergence of mini-pit bulls. These dogs inherited the energy and stamina of pit bulls, but have a softer temperament and smaller size. Who are mini pit bulls, where did they come from: we will tell you later in the article.

Origin of the Mini Pitbull

Fighting dogs – pit bulls were taught to be aggressive towards other animals. As the popularity of dogfighting began to wane, breeders began to adapt pit bulls to life with a human as a pet. Animals were weaned from killing, aggressive dogs were excluded from the list of individuals for breeding.

Interesting! Previously, there was a tradition according to which the owners of the dogs washed their opponent’s dog before a fight, and if the animal showed aggression, it was disqualified.

In addition, pit bulls are no small dogs by any means, so keeping them in an apartment was a hassle. The breeders were puzzled by the idea of getting a dog similar in performance to the Pit Bull Terrier, but smaller.

Experiments in this direction began at the end of the 20th century in many nurseries in the United States. Crossbreeding of various American Pit Bulls with other breeds of dogs, mainly with various types of terriers and bulldogs, led to the emergence of the American Bully, today a fairly well-known breed.

One of the nurseries took a different path. As a result of a cross between the American Pit Bull and the Patterdale Terrier, a breed was born, which was named the Mini Pit Bull. This breed is not recognized even in America, you can buy mixed puppies only in a few kennels in the US.

But as a result of these experiments, it was possible to create a mini-pit bull that really looks like its more famous fellow American Pit Bull Terrier.

Attention! The breed is only gaining popularity, but has not yet been recognized by the ICF or any other canine organization, including the American Kennel Club.

  2. Born hunters. “Pocket” pit bulls were used for hunting small game. This is where their dislike for other animals comes from. Genes take their toll.
  3. Why are they afraid of pit bulls? At the time of the popularity of dogfighting, the image of pit bulls was brutally demonized. The authorities hung posters with torn to pieces people who allegedly became victims of this dog. So they tried to reduce the popularity of gladiatorial battle animals.
  4. Due to the rarity of the breed, the cost of its representatives reaches fabulous figures. A California breeder rates a female from his micro-pit bull kennel Queen Kalifia at $ 50,000.

Description of the breed, standards, and appearance

The growth of mini-pit bulls ranges from 14 to 16 inches at the withers. Normal weight is in the range of 30-42 pounds. The colors are black, white, red, cream, brown, and gray. Sometimes there are white markings on the chest.

Mini Pit Bull Terriers are loyal to their owners. With the right upbringing, they can become good friends and companions. They are smart and love to please their owners, so they are well trained.

They get along well with people, but they often dislike other animals. Only if the dog grows up with another pet side by side, knowing it from childhood, then it is unlikely that misunderstandings will arise between them.

A Pitbull should not be left alone with a small child. Children can damage the pride of the dog if they are disrespectful to it – dragging by the tail, pulling by the ears, or trying to ride it like a horse.

By nature, a dwarf pitbull has a good reaction, attentiveness, which makes it a good watchman. Dogs of this breed are very active, reckless, and want to lead in everything. The dog can sometimes play too much and decide that its the master. Here it is important to gently but strictly put the animal in place.

Interesting! The commonly used name “dwarf pitbull” is rather an attempt to pass off wishful thinking. The dog does not have signs of dwarfism, and it can only be called small in comparison with the American pit bull.

How to choose the right Mini Pitbull puppy

This dog is a hybrid breed, so it is not so easy to find small pitbull puppies. They should be taken from a trusted breeder or a reputable nursery. They should present information about the parents and other ancestors of the dog, as well as certificates of the absence of genetic diseases in puppies and data on vaccinations.

Do not rush and grab the cutest baby. You need to observe the behavior of the puppies. A lethargic and inactive dog will most likely grow up to be lazy calm. A cheerful and active puppy, will probably not lose its energy in adulthood.

It is important that the puppy reacts normally when petted or picked up. Indicators of a dog’s health are clear eyes, a shiny thick coat, no visible injuries or traces of diarrhea.

Due to the rarity of the breed, the cost of small pitbull puppies has a price tag of – 1500-4500 Dollars.

Caring for Miniature Pit Bull Puppies

Immediately after buying a small pit bull, you need to show it to the veterinarian, then come for an examination at least once every six months and get vaccinated on time. If it is not your plan to become a breeder, then you should ask when you can neuter or castrate your pet.

You should prepare a place where the puppy will be warm and comfortable. Protect the house and the puppy: remove fragile objects, hide wires and chemicals. A short coat will not protect the Pit Bull Terrier from frost and rain, so in inclement weather, the dog is dressed for walking.

The required amount of food for a pet should be calculated based on its body weight. Typically, the daily allowance for a puppy up to six months is 7% of its own weight. After six months, this amount is reduced to 4% by weight.

Puppies up to six months can be given milk or cereals cooked in milk. Then you could include in the menu finely cut meat, then vegetables and sea fish. At six months, a mini-pit bull puppy eats like an adult dog.

Important! Mini pit bulls are prone to allergies, so new foods should be given with extreme caution, introducing them into the diet every three days.

A small pit bull needs a lot of time. An obligatory daily ritual should be a walk, a workout that includes regular running and jogging.

Pit Bull Terriers are not whimsical to care for. It is enough to carry out standard manipulations to observe the hygiene of the animal, namely, regularly comb their fur with a special brush, bathe every 1-2 months, brush their teeth and ears at least once every two weeks, and periodically trim their nails.

Attention! It is important to cut off only the lighter part. There are capillaries in the dark part of the claws.

Dwarf pit bulls are prone to obesity, and therefore it is especially important to pay attention to their diet.

The right diet for mini pit bull terriers

There are two options for feeding your dog: prepared food or homemade food. When choosing the first type of food, you need to contact your veterinarian to tell you which food is suitable for the pit bull, and how to give it correctly.

If a natural type of feeding is chosen, then the peculiarities of the needs of the pets must be taken into account. Protein is important for dogs of all ages. Meat should be 40-50% of the serving. It is important that it is non-greasy, but with cartilage and tendons. For example, horse meat, goat meat, lean chicken, or turkey.

Adult mini Pitbulls can be given raw meat, but if there are doubts about the quality of the product, it is better to pour boiling water over it or freeze it beforehand. It is recommended to give cottage cheese or kefir every three days. Rice, buckwheat, millet will do. Boiled or raw vegetables are given in small quantities – zucchini, beets, carrots, cucumbers, pumpkin.

Important! Dogs should not be given potatoes. It interferes with the absorption of nutrients and is poorly digested in animals.

It is forbidden to feed the pet with food from the table of humans. In addition to the fact that it badly affects the discipline of the animal and threatens with unpleasant antics in the future, so also intestinal disorders, gastritis, diarrhea.

Important! Pit bulls should not be given any sweet or flour products, fatty, salty, fried foods, grapes, broccoli, citrus fruits, bones.

Due to the tendency to allergies, it is important to pay attention to the dog’s well-being. If the mini pitbull starts sneezing, or rashes appear on the skin, it is very likely that it is an allergy.

In this case, you will have to deal with figuring out which product the body’s reaction to has appeared. This is done in conjunction with a veterinarian, and the process of eliminating the allergen is quite long.

Walking and physical activity

For walks from 8 weeks, it is worth taking a leash regularly. It is better to use a long tarpaulin tape rather than a tape measure. You can let the dog run freely, but only where there are no other people.

If it is not possible to go out for a walk, you need to give your pet plenty of running on the treadmill. Pit bulls need to spend energy somewhere.

When the dog grows up, for strength training it will be possible to tie a car tire to a leash and make it run with it. This will be good strength training for your dog. You can also purchase a special harness with weights.

You need to walk with your pet at least twice a day for 40-60 minutes, and preferably more. Walking should include training elements (learning new commands or repeating old ones), jumping over obstacles. In warmer months, with a pocket pitbull, you can go to the beach and let It swim.

Training and education

From the age of 3-5 weeks, dogs begin a period of socialization, and at this time the pet begins to acquaint with the outside world. It is important that a pitbull puppy can explore a new home, learn new smells and tastes, and get to know people and other animals.

The more the dog learns about people, the calmer he will feel in their company, the more it will trust them.

Pit Bull Terriers require proper training, so it is recommended to be trained by a specialist dog handler. Mini-pit bulls inherited the ability to feel subtle from their ancestors, and therefore they will immediately notice the owner’s uncertainty and try to take over.

If you lose authority in the eyes of a dog, it will be very difficult to regain it, and this will negatively affect training.

Vaccinations and disease propensity

Usually, puppies are vaccinated at the age of 8-9 weeks, and at 12 they are revaccinated against distemper, leptospirosis, hepatitis, eneryat, parvovirus. Dogs are vaccinated against rabies at the age of 7 months.

The mini-pitbull, which is typical of mestizos, is not as healthy as its ancestors. The following diseases are typical for these dogs:

  • dysplasia of the hip joint;
  • hypothyroidism;
  • obesity;
  • heart diseases;
  • overheating and hypothermia;
  • diseases of the digestive system;
  • allergy.

Little remains of the former killer machines. Their energy was channeled into a peaceful channel and now they have turned from aggressors into brave defenders. If the American pit bull is in a small apartment, then the mini-pit bull will stay there comfortably. For a long time, these dogs passed “tests for kindness” and willingness to live with a person.

Now, these dogs are ready to serve their master with faith and truth, giving all the tenderness and warmth, which makes them ideal companions and loving family members.
