White Chow Chow | Genetics, Price, Breeders…(With Pictures)

The Chow Chow is a unique dog. Considered one of the oldest in the world, this Chinese breed with a serious, independent temperament, a robust body, and a furry coat look like a cross between a dog, a bear, and a lion.

The white Chow Chow can be solid or diluted color. Many solid chow chows have a pale cream coat, and some can become almost red (light). Commonly, the tongue and palate are dark blue, the gums are pink, the lips are black, and the eyes are dark brown.

This type of chow chow always has ears in a tan hue and the nose is black with a pink undertone. It should be noted that puppies are born with a black nose; it only turns pink with age.

Interesting fact . If you see a seemingly red chow chow, but its nose is noticeably pinkish, then it is not a red Chow Chow, but a dark cream.

In the case of diluted creams, it is known that some can have almost white fur, except for several shaded areas of the body and the ears in a tan beige tone. The nose is dark gray, also with a pink pigment.

The tongue and palate are bluish-gray, the gums are pink, and the eyes are medium brown.

Genetics Behind the White Chow Chow

There is no standard genetic formula for the formation of a white coat, but it is known that all-white dogs have a different genotype (combination of genes):

  • cb – incomplete albinos with blue eyes;
  • ca – albinos with red eyes;
  • BW / Bc – white with a black nose;
  • bw and bc are white dogs with a brown nose;
  • Bed / beg – fawn dogs with a brown nose, which, due to the strong lightening of the coat, look white;
  • MM is a genetic pair, the presence of which causes diseases that are incompatible with life.

In its pure form, only two colors can be synthesized: black and yellow. White color appears when genes are present in the genetic DNA chain that lighten or prohibit color pigments, for example:

  • The recessive gene C inhibits all color pigments. This phenomenon is called incomplete albinism or leucism. Leucistic dogs have white hair, but the eyes and nose are dark. From a dog with a colored color, they can give birth to puppies of any color.
  • In some cases, the whiteness of the coat is given by the M gene, which is responsible for the “marbling” of the color. If the DNA contains this gene, then the dog’s coat will not be pure white, but with small, almost imperceptible colored areas.

Experts can determine the presence of a particular gene by external data. For dog breeders, unless they are going to engage in the selection of pets, it is enough to know the typical characteristics of the breed

White Chow Chow Grooming & Maintenance

Cleanliness

Having a white-haired dog, getting it to always stay white can be a challenge.

A White dog tends to have a coat with a grayish or yellowish tone, the cause is the environmental conditions in which it moves, dust, and environmental pollution. This dirt does not stain the dog’s hair, with a good wash the problem will be solved.

But BEWARE, this does not mean that we should increase the frequency of bathing. Most white-haired dogs have sensitive skin, therefore frequent bathing is not recommended.

Hair loss

In this breed, hair loss is very abundant, especially during autumn and spring molts. Although the hair loss may seem excessive, it is proportional to the thickness of its coat.

Chow Chow diet

The food that is provided to the Chow Chow must be of high quality since it is an animal prone to developing gastric problems.

Whether it is industrial, home-prepared, or raw food, the quality of the ingredients must be taken care of. It is not recommended to buy cheap croquettes from the supermarket.

In order for your dog to have good digestion, it is best to divide its daily intake into 2 or 3 meals throughout the day.

Chow Chow puppies must have an adequate and quality diet to guarantee their healthy growth.

Where Can You Find a White Chow Chow?

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all types and colors of chow chow have a blue tongue?

Yes. The dark bluish-colored tongue is one of the most distinctive features of the Chow Chow breed. But this coloration is not visible until several weeks after birth. Chow chow puppies are born with a pink tongue, like the vast majority of dogs. The blue color begins to develop as the weeks go by.

By the 8th or 10th week of being born, the dog should have bluish-black gums and tongue. Some specimens may exhibit a darker tone than others, as well as the presence of small pink spots.

Important . Just because a chow chow has light colored dots on its tongue does not mean it is not pure.

Are Chow Chow Dogs Aggressive?

Its proud and independent temperament makes it an especially calm animal. It is not very playful or requires a lot of attention, so it may suit people who do not want to constantly respond to their dog’s calls for attention.

Final Thoughts: Is The White Chow Chow A Good Pet?

The Chow Chow makes an excellent medium-sized pet dog, which can adapt to life in different environments, even in apartments. Since both types of Chow Chow have a double-layered coat, this breed is often recommended more for cold climates.

In hot places, the Chow Chow needs to spend most of its time indoors with air conditioning to avoid overheating.
